On the 4th of Juli I wasn’t celebrating Independence Day, but I was chilling with the senior kids of the British School in the Netherlands, in Voorschoten. Just like last year, I spoke with them about drugs & alcohol. I made some small adjustments to the materials and set-up, but the general idea is still the same. Keeping it real! Below you will find some context with THIS PREZI that I used.
Youth is constantly being marketed by twisted and contra-dictionary signs and stories about (mis)use of alcohol & drugs. How do you weapon yourself as a youngster against the ‘spam’ of marketeers and society in general? How do you walk your path (including wanting to try and discover new things) as healthy as possible? How not to get played…!
During this day we talk about what use of substance of any form might do to you: the bad thing AND the fun things. The kids get challenged to walk the shoes of the marketeers of the lobby pro and against alcohol. They judge and create ideas for campaigns. They look at the impact of marketing, as well as alcohol and drugs on their developing brain. In order to guard them, we end the day with making personal plans about how they are going to address the ‘treats & threats’ of life with an healthy mind & body.
I’ve really enjoyed working with this group. I wish them all the luck in college! And I hope to see you next year again, British School. 
Sociaal ondernemerschap op de HU

Sinds dit schooljaar staat er in Amersfoort een fantastisch nieuw gebouw van de Hogeschool Utrecht (HU). In een mooie en inspirerende omgeving kun je hier studeren in o.a. de richting ‘Maatschappij en Recht’. Toen ik (Thomas) in juni een inspiratiesessie gaf over de beleving van het hangjongerenprobleem tijdens de conferentie ‘straatpubers‘, raakte ik aan de praat met de docent social work van de HU. Zij gaf aan op zoek te zijn naar jonge sociale ondernemers die een beetje praktijk kunnen brengen in het nu vooral theoretische programma. A couple of weeks ago I was watching TV and there was a professor, Jelle Jolles, who was telling a lot of stuff that I really agree with! He was telling about the youth of today, neurology, and talent development. One of his conclusions was that we need more story-tellers for kids in school. It was awesome that I had the opportunity to do that at the British School in the Netherlands, on the topic ‘drugs & alcohol’. Trigger Boys gastles @ WeekendCollege

Tijdens de borrel van de conferentie Onderwijs(-)Talenten heb ik Jouko van der Mast ontmoet. Dit gesprek wekte mijn interesse om een kijkje te nemen bij het initiatief waar Jouko bij betrokken is, het WeekendCollege. Amsterdam Zuid-oost, elke zaterdag weer, zijn ze er te vinden, jongeren die al vanaf 10 uur op hun vrije dag bezig zijn met school.
Bijles in rekenen, economie, taal en persoonlijke begeleiding bij overige vakken tonen de behoefte aan extra onderwijs. De gezamenlijke lunch, lessen in drama en theater, zaalvoetbal en tekenlessen zorgen ervoor dat de lol niet ontbreekt! OCW meets Trigger Boys @ Conferentie Onderwijs(-)Talenten

Het programma van de conferentie begon met een introducerende film “Heb jij talent?” en werd voortgezet met een gesprek met de staatssecretaris Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap Marja van Bijsterveldt-Vliegenthart. Ze vroeg alle genodigden gedurende de middag mee te denken over hoe het onderwijs haar rol in de talentontwikkeling kan invullen. Eindpresentaties ‘Ondernemend wijs in de Wijk’, Amersfoort (3-2-2010)

Op woensdag 3 februari zullen in Amersfoort de eindpresentaties van het project ‘Ondernemend wijs in de wijk’ plaatsvinden. Tijdens deze bijeenkomst zullen 100 tot 150 1e- en 3e-jaars leerlingen van het ROC (ASA en Midden Nederland) de bevindingen presenteren van hun werkzaamheden in de wijk (o.a. onderzoeken, filmprojecten, werkbezoeken). Het project heeft aansluiting gevonden bij ‘Amersfoort Vernieuwd’ en heeft daarom in aandachtswijken van Amersfoort plaatsgevonden. Read the rest of this entry »
